Introducing Your Kids to Essential Oils

by pamelawright on December 17, 2011

This year I discovered the wonderful benefits of therapeutic grade essential oils for my family!  They are ancient natural remedies derived from plants, trees and flowers and have been used for centuries.

You’ll find mention of essential oils in the Bible and throughout history.  They were used in ancient Egypt for natural healing and beauty purposes.  These oils were also used during other time periods including the Elizabethan and Victorian eras.  Queen Elizabeth I liked having lavender in the castle and also used it to help relieve her migraines.  Queen Victoria also liked lavender.  She used a lavender deodorant and kept lavender in the castle too.  In the 20th century a French scientist named Rene-Maurice Gattefosse was severely burned and used lavender oil to treat his burn and prevent scarring.

My family uses essential oils for various purposes.  I use various oils including lavender, peace & calming, frankincense, cinnamon, grapefruit, orange, and lemon for relaxing and refreshing.  One of my sons who has ADHD uses peppermint oil to boost his focus and concentration.  He also likes the scent of  lemon oil and orange oil.  I use peace & calming oil on my youngest son to help him calm down when he gets upset.  I also use lavender oil, lemon oil, and orange oil on him.  Lastly, my husband likes essential oils too.  His favorite is the lemon oil.

After I decided I was going to try using the essential oils on my sons, I pondered how to introduce the oils to them because I didn’t know how they would react.  I was actually quite surprised that they both liked the essential oils and responded so positively.  Why?  Well, it’s very rare for all of us to like the same foods so I thought the odds of them liking essential oils was not in my favor.  I must say I was delightfully surprised when both of them cooperated with using the oils and liked them!

I introduced my boys to the oils by telling them that essential oils were ancient natural remedies that came from plants and trees.  I told them that they had been used for centuries in ancient Egypt for natural healing purposes and would help them focus and concentrate better.   Then, I let them sniff the ones I got for them to see if they liked them.  My oldest son took to them right away.  He liked the peppermint oil and expressed how it helped him focus!  He also liked the other oils.  My youngest son was more skeptical but admitted he liked the lemon oil.  He has also expressed that the peace & calming oil really works.  He first shared this after I put some peace & calming oil on him, on a day when he came home really frustrated from school, and it helped him calm down.

I love that my kids are learning about how essential oils support their natural health & wellness!  Essential oils have become a part of our lifestyle.  I am so grateful for them.  They bring wellness to our lives every day!
