Growing Up in a Brand… Las Vegas!

by pamelawright on August 12, 2011

When I was 6-years old my mom, stepfather and I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada!  Why?  Well, my stepfather was a stagehand who worked on productions and the economy drove us west from Detroit, MI to Hollywood, CA to Las Vegas, NV!

As a young girl I instantly fell in love with Las Vegas!  I just adored the bright lights, big signs and glamorous hotels.  My favorite hotels included the MGM (where my stepfather worked), Circus Circus, and Caesars Palace.  I loved each one for different reasons.

The MGM was glamorous!  It had a great arcade,  delightful ice cream parlour, and an amazing in-house movie theater that showed old films like Singin’ in the Rain.  Circus Circus was just a flat out FUN place to be!  I would go there to enjoy the carnival atmosphere and play fun games.  I remember this one game where you shoot water into the mouth of a clown.  It was sooo much fun!

Now, Caesar’s Palace always attracted me from afar!  It was mysterious…  I didn’t spend much time inside of  it because we were partial to the MGM and Circus Circus.  What attracted me most about Caesar’s Palace was its Romanesque theme.  I loved glimpsing its beautiful pillars and spectacular waterfall!  I also enjoyed seeing its humongous marquee sign that announced the likes of Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Muhammad Ali, and Cher!  I also recall seeing this huge marquee for Elvis but that was at the Hilton.

As a biz owner, we can learn so much about branding from Las Vegas!  I was drawn to particular hotels as a child because of their brand.  I still am…  Here’s a few questions to ask yourself about your brand:

  • What do you think draws people to your business?
  • What attracts people to your business… what are the words you hear them saying?
  • What is your business known for locally or globally?

Las Vegas is truly a FABULOUS brand!  Why not be fabulous?

Wow, Pamela…Your explanation makes it seem so concrete. Branding always seemed so elusive, but what a crystal clear illustration.
Thanks!

I have never been to Las Vegas and feel no pull from the glitzy city, but it sounds like it was a magical place to grow up for you!

Thanks, Sue! I live in the Los Angeles area now. So, I’m fascinated these days by Hollywood and Beverly Hills every time I’m over there! What type of convention are you going to? Have fun!! It’s so cool that you’ll be able to experience the Las Vegas brand up close and personal! A great brand definitely gives you an experience…

Pamela, Love how you shared “branding” with us. Sounds like you got a great foundation being there at a young age as a teaser and look how far you have come because of that. I was in Vegas last year and found it magical. Now when I write and talk I will be more aware of how my branding is “showing” up.
