Essential Oils for Children with ADHD: An Alternative to Meds for Your Child’s Natural Health & Wellness

Does your child have ADHD?  Well… both my sons have ADHD and my search for natural solutions led me to essential oils.  I use these oils on my boys, husband, friends and myself with great success.  I am writing this article to get the word out about these amazing natural oils because they are effective and get results I like!

Amazing Essential Oils

My Boys with ADHD

I have 3 kids and two of them have been diagnosed with ADHD.  I haven’t been diagnosed with ADHD, however, I have been diagnosed with PTSD.  I share this so you get the picture of the energy flying around our home.

My sons are now twelve and fifteen and didn’t  get diagnosed with ADHD until this year and last year, respectively.  So, we’ve been dealing with ADHD related behavioral issues for a very long time.  We didn’t seriously consider that they might have ADHD until they started middle school. 

Things got rocky for my older son in 6th grade so I took him out of public school for 7th grade and homeschooled him that year.  That was a great experiment and experience for us!  However, my son really missed his friends and teachers after that year and wanted to return to his middle school.  So, after one year of homeschooling with mom, he happily returned to his middle school the next year.

Inattentive or Hyperactive?

What type of ADHD does your child have?  My sons have the inattentive type of ADHD.  So, they’re prone to being inattentive versus hyperactive.  Before I knew much about ADHD I used to think inattentive in this context meant a child just couldn’t pay attention to anything.  But, I’ve discovered it doesn’t mean exactly that because my boys are highly attentive  (aka hyper focused) to the things they are interested in.  However, they are inattentive to the things they find boring (ie homework and cleaning their room)

One of my sons though was way more hyperactive as a toddler and young child than he is now.  He was all over the place.  I could tell you story after story and laugh about it now but it was no laughing matter then.  His behavior of constantly running off caused me a lot of stress and anxiety.  And that was all before I knew I had PTSD arising from a car accident in my childhood.

Discovering Essential Oils

Are you getting a glimpse now of the energy flowing around our home before we discovered essential oils?  I can honestly say that essential oils have come into our lives like a calming, relaxing breeze. 

These oils have brought more peace and joy into our lives!  They help one of my sons relax and calm down naturally when he’s feeling stressed or anxious.  They also help him settle down so he can fall asleep and get a good night’s sleep.  These oils have also helped my other son focus better so he can pay attention longer to things he finds boring.  I have found that this son of mine is sensitive to smell and really likes the aroma.  Finally, these oils help me de-stress and relax naturally every week.

Here’s a quick list of the essential oils that support my family’s natural health & wellness:

  • De-Stress & Relax:  Lavender, Peace & Calming, Vetiver, Frankincense
  • Focus Better:  Peppermint, Lemon, Vetiver, Lavender
  • Sleep Good:  Lavender
  • Be Happy:  Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerine

I have a six year old daughter with ADHD and I have not medicated her. I have tried every natural remedy I came across as far as diet change and vitamins. I had no idea you could treat with essentials oils, I look forward to learning more on your blog :)

I have only recently started looking into essential oils to help my son with his adhd/bipolar disorder. He has been unmedicated for quite some time, we have been using natural lithium and omega 3’s to treat his bipolar, but haven’t found anything to help with the adhd side. How do you apply the oils? I have heard some recommend diffusers, some put it on their feet at night, or on the back of their neck. What has been most effective for you?

You’ll find some articles on how to use the oils under the Lavender Oil and Essential Oils catgeories on this blog. Each child just like each adult is different so what works for one will not necessarily work for another. I suggest trying the various methods to see what works for your son. Good luck!
